The place of Zoot Suit in the history of Chicano theatre in the USA:
Zoot Suit is an intricate play, containing Chicano background and complex characters. This play did not actually appear in the history of Chicano theater until quite a while later. Chicano theater has origins starting from the late 1590s when Spanish-speaking people appeared in the Southwest US. What is now known as Southern California seemed to have the great density of Hispanic theater activity. Most of this activity was focused on advocating civil rights and acknowledgement towards Hispanic people, and Zoot Suit was arguably one of the most attention-demanding pieces to address injustice against them. This play was created shortly after racial violence against Hispanic people in California. In fact, it was the first Chicano play to appear on Broadway in the late 1970s. This play created a pathway for Chicano theater in the 20th and 21st centuries.
